  What Over 50 Years
  of Video Marketing
  has to offer you!
  The world of video technology
  is changing at lightning fast
  speeds.  Decisions for selecting
  the correct combination of
  video equipment for the best
  functioning system can often
  be complex and bewildering.
  We, at ATV Research Inc,
  have been dealing with such
  issues for over 50 years.
  Working with thousands of
  dealers and installers across
the United States as well as
  numerous other countries
  has exposed us to many
  unusual and challenging
  technical situations.  We're
here to assist you make the
  correct selection for that
  next install.  Our techical/

Basic Combiner Characteristics:

1. Passive combiners never require power. They always have loss.  Typically: 3-4dB for a 2-way, 6-7dB for a 4-way, 11-12dB for an 8-way, 18dB for a 12-way and 21dB for a 24-way. Losses are offset with the use of an appropriate launch amplifier following the combiner.

2. Active Combiners always require power since they include a built-in broadband amplifier to offset the losses that are inherently incurred through the passive combining of signals. This type of combiner eliminates the need for a separate launch amp.

3. Combiners are available in both rack and non-rack styles.

4. Splitters can serve as combiners.  A few companies actually label such a device either as a combiner or a splitter. When using splitters as combiners it is best to select a balanced model that has equal losses on each port. Also, it is important to be diligent in only using the output ports as "inputs" and thus only the input port as the new "combined output".  Failure to do this will be catastrophic because of the port-to-port isolation designed into the splitters resulting in serious signal unbalance.

5. When using active combiners, it is imperative not to overdrive with too high of input levels which could result in serious cross-modulation/distortion causing signal degradation on the combined cable channels.

6. The good news on combining is that neither the passive or active models care whether you are using them in an Analog or Digital system.  All combiners can be used in either Analog, Digital or Hybrid (combination of analog and digital) systems.

Keeping the above six pointers in mind, selecting the correct combiner for any headend cable system is an easy task.
